Contact the lead preceptor or contact person one month prior to your preceptorship starting date. The first day of your rotation (Monday) is for traveling to your preceptorship site to get settled with housing, taking part in any site orientation and at 6 p.m. taking part in a phone orientation in which you will need computer access. You will be informed of the remaining two phone orientations from Dr. Paul Hunter, Course Director. In most cases you will begin clinical work on the second day (Tuesday) of the rotation, however, please check with your site as some students may be on call the first night of your preceptorship. If you have questions about your preceptorship, contact Louisa Zelm at the Medical School by phone: 608-265-9081, or via Email: zelm@wisc.edu. Your background check information and immunization records can be found in OASIS under Academic History/My Med School. It is your responsibility to copy that information and send it to your site coordinator or preceptor via email before your preceptorship starts.

Housing
|
The day prior to ABMC Orientation, students may obtain access to the house where students will stay during their rotation. Students will stay at a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom (7 students maximum) home owned by Aurora Health Care called Marty's Place. The address is located at 1741 Deckner Avenue, Green Bay. The house will accommodate medical students from Green Bay rotations, therefore, medical students should plan on sharing a bedroom with another medical student of the same sex. Please park in the Deckner Clinic/Aurora Dialysis Center parking lot, which is adjacent to the house. It is fully furnished and equipped with kitchenware, appliances (washer and dryer are located in the basement), furniture, and a television. Bed linens and a pillow are also provided. Students will need to purchase food and related items. Also, the house has wireless internet. Keys can be picked up at the ABMC Security Office. The security office is located on the 1st floor and will have an envelope with student keys and driving directions for all.
The direct phone number to the student house is (920) 469-3562. Local calls are free of charge.

BayCare Clinic and Aurora BayCare Medical Center are excited to offer a General Surgery Preceptorship in Green Bay. This six-week rotation will be spent primarily working directly with me and will consist of a combination of General, Vascular, and Trauma Surgery. Students will essentially mirror my professional life for six weeks and be involved in the care of my current patient population. A typical week includes both inpatient and outpatient experiences. Students will see new and established patients during my office hours (two half-days per week) and multiple hospitalized patients on daily rounds and consultations. On days that I am on call, we will see Emergency Room consultations and respond to trauma alerts. Students will have multiple opportunities to follow patients from initial consultation, through their surgery and post-operative hospital stay, and finally in office follow-up. A surgical case load of not less than two cases per day should be anticipated. Students will follow a volume of patients consistent with their experience and skill level. It is expected that the students will do the required reading and research necessary to fully understand the disease process of their patients and be able to formulate daily plans of care. We will discuss and review these daily. Students will be involved in the operating room to the max extent possible as their skills allow. We will be stressing basic surgical skills which will be of great use in the future. Students will be on call when I am, but not more than once per week. This can be done either in the hospital or from home. You will work the weekends that I work - generally one per month. While the majority of the rotation will be with me, my partners have interesting cases as well and you will be welcome to work with them on a case-by-case basis. Likewise, if you have specific subspecialty interests, we will work to expose you to those disciplines as much as possible. We have very active surgeons is nearly every specialty within BayCare Clinic. Green Bay and northeastern Wisconsin have ample opportunities for activities outside the hospital. Door county is just and hour north. Depending on the season, our daily office conversations cover hunting, fishing, building and flying airplanes, restoring antique cars, high-end new cars, boating, scuba diving, bird watching, snow skiing, cycling, photography, and, of course, the Packers. We are committed to making this a great experience for our students. If you have questions or are interested in the rotation, please contact us and check out our websites. Dr. Johnson's bio can be found www.baycare.net under the physician's tab. Information about the hospital can be reviewed at www.aurorabaycare.com.
