Â* Stevens Smith, Ph.D. Â- Expertise in community-based participatory research with Native Americans, quit-line interventions
Â* Bruce Christiansen, Ph.D. Â- Expertise in community-based participatory research with low-income smokers in Milwaukee
Â* Doug Jorenby, Ph.D. Â- Director of UW-CTRIÂ's Smoking Cessation and Prevention Clinic, expertise in clinical trial research and nicotine vaccine
Â* Robert Adsit, M.A. Â- Director of UW-CTRIÂ's Outreach Program, expertise in translating clinical research and use of electronic health records
Â* Kate Kobinsky Â- Coordinator of the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line
Â* Research staff who are treating smokers in the context of a clinical trial being conducted at primary care clinics in south-central Wisconsin

Objectives
|
Â* Students will attain proficiency in selecting and delivering evidence-based smoking cessation treatments.
Â* Students will learn about the evidence-base for the 2008 Public Health Service recommendations for treating tobacco dependence.
Â* Students will develop an in-depth understanding of tobacco and tobacco dependence treatment in specific sub-populations (e.g., low-income, racial minorities, mental health status).
Â* Students will discuss how systems-level changes, such as changes to electronic health records or accreditation standards, can influence health care and delivery of tobacco dependence treatment.
Â* Students will describe strategies for engagement in community participatory research.

Content
|
The overall goal of this course is to train future physicians to use evidence-based smoking cessation treatments and to understand smoking cessation research so that they will be able to interpret such evidence throughout their careers. We will place a special emphasis on underserved and specific subgroups of smokers (e.g., low-income, racial minorities, mental health status).
Â* Evidence-based practice for treating tobacco dependence
o Treatment plans
o Pharmacotherapy
o Counseling, including motivational interviewing
o Community-based interventions such as quit lines
Â* Specific subpopulations of smokers
Â* Use of health systems to enhance treatment of tobacco users
o Electronic health records
Â* Community-participatory research in subpopulations of smokers
o Low-income smokers and the Salvation Army
o Native American smokers

Prerequisites
|

Methods
|
Class schedule will be flexible. Some days will be spent off-site (e.g., in Milwaukee at the UW-CTRI office, and meeting with community collaborators such as the Salvation Army staff) or at off hours (e.g., Monday afternoon/evening shadowing in the UW-CTRI Smoking Cessation and Prevention Clinic). Class will run from 8:30-4:30, with a break for lunch.

Evaluating
|
Students will be assessed in the following ways:
Â* Their grade on the Continuing Medication Education test for smoking cessation treatment
Â* Their literature review and class presentation
Â* Their engagement with the overall class and materials
The students will also receive peer reviews on their interaction with a mock patient and their use of evidence-based treatment.
