Objectives As the use of information technology increases, physicians and students are largely left to learn on their own how to make use of them. In this course, we will provide an overview of informatics competencies that will be necessary for their future activities such as decision support, electronic health records, quality measurement and improvement, personal health records, and personalized medicine.
Content This 2 credit course will prepare students to use computers and information systems to their full extent during residency and in practice.
Prerequisites Basic computer literacy. Fourth year medical student standing or consent of instructor.
Methods Students work asynchronously through all online lectures, discussion questions, assignments and exams, subject to the requirement to complete all coursework within the allotted two weeks. The instructor participates in discussions and is also available via email for questions that are not likely to be of general interest to the rest of the class.
Materials Provided Reading and video lectures are provided.
Expectations Daily attendance for online requirements and commitment to class participation. Students will watch a video lecture for each of the ten course modules, complete all readings, and respond to all discussion questions in all modules.
Evaluating Students are evaluated by their responses to quizzes and discussion questions for all modules, including their interactions with responses of other students, and by two online exams.
