Objectives - Health Care Financing/Medical Economics: Students will be able to discuss costs and return on investment of prenatal care and cost/benefit of funding for Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility
- Quality Improvement: Students will work on a project with Milwaukee Health Department staff
- Community Health: Students will actively engage with community resources such as WIC, Birth to Three, March of Dimes
- Health Disparities: Students will be able to discuss factors contributing to maternal and child health disparities, specifically those related to infant mortality in Milwaukee
- Environmental Health: Students will visit the home of an expectant mother and note environmental strengths and hazards
- Patient Safety: Students will participate in interdisciplinary discussions with antepartum mothers at risk of preterm delivery regarding timing and route of delivery, expectations of neonatal outcome and care, and systems for improving maternal and neonatal outcome, such as policies on elective induction of labor, treatment of Group B Strep, and
Content Students will work with clinical faculty and Milwaukee Health Department staff to explore determinants of Maternal-Child Health in Milwaukee. Public health competencies and learning objectives which will be enhanced during this experience include: (see Objectives)
Prerequisites
Methods Activities:
• Maternal Health (40%)
o Clinical care with Dr. Puterbaugh, other OBG faculty, nurse midwives or a community health center physician
o Home visits with MHD or Prenatal Care Coordination program
• Neonatology (20%)
o Clinical care of premature, preterm or otherwise ill infants
o Discussions with antepartum mothers of expectations and options for delivery and management
• Public Health (30%)
o MHD STD clinic
o Monthly Milwaukee Immunization Task Force meetings,
o Quarterly Wisconsin Council on Immunization Practices meetings (as available)
o Didactics with Community Pediatric Residents from MCW
o Public Health Project with Dr. Hunter in STDs, nutrition, reporting, access to care (specific role as negotiated with Dr. Hunter). See attached form.
