Objectives
This course will allow the student to concentrate on pre- and post-operative issues related to surgical disease. Often, the non-surgeon M.D. is the first to discuss the possibility of surgery with the patient and is involved in post-operative management. This course will prepare the non-surgeon M.D. to answer many of the questions patients have about surgery and about health issues after surgery. Additionally, it will reinforce the importance of wellness for the preventable or avoidable surgical disease. The discussion sessions will illuminate the gray areas of surgery.

Content
Students will pick areas of interest within the surgical setting and spend one week in each area of interest. Within each week, further variety of experience will be obtained by attendance at specific clinics and conferences.
Prerequisites
4th year medical student standing
Methods
Students are expected to be clinically active 5 days/week for the entire day, primarily with 1/2 day clinics. Attendance in the operating room is not required with the exception of Transplant Surgery where students are expected to scrub on a living related donor kidney transplant. On other rotations, attendance in the operating room is optional. Students will attend conferences and lectures as per service. Students will meet in small group sessions with Dr. Bernhardt for case-based discussions. It is expected that students use principles of evidenced based medicine in their practice and case discussions. Students will write one evidence based medicine paper and be prepared to discuss with the course director at the weekly meeting. The Department of Surgery Librarian is available to assist students to advance their skill in this regard.

Students will write one evidence based medicine paper and be prepared to discuss with the course director at the weekly meeting.
Students are expected to come prepared to clinics and case-based discussions.
Students should be prepared to be in clinically oriented activities Monday through Friday for the entire day. Ample time for independent study is available outside these times. The 4th Year Student Interview and Step 2 Leave Policy will be strictly adhered to.
